Part two in my motivational series from “Old School Grit” by Darrin Donnelly is Rule #4, Finish Strong.
Your response to events (good or bad) in life is crucial to the process of growth and success. I remember not making my All-Star baseball team when I was twelve years old and being really dejected and questioning a lot of things regarding my baseball abilities. I was complaining to my father one day and he stopped me and said, “maybe you weren't good enough to be on that team.” I remember being shocked that he said that, but then he followed it with, “But, that doesn’t mean it has to remain that way. Instead of complaining, go out there and outwork everyone.” I was never the most talented player on the field, but I learned that I can CHOOSE my response to events (good or bad) in my life.
Donnelly says it best in this chapter, “You have to expect your most challenging moment right before your greatest victory. Remember this the next time you feel like you can’t catch a break or you start questioning whether you have what it takes to accomplish your dreams. Everybody starts strong, but champions finish strong.”
