Happy #MotivationalMonday (05/04/20) #Jordan Part 2 Continuing the theme on Jordan and “The Last Dance,” a documentary about Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls championship run, even the best player in the world at the time had to have a reality-check with his ego. It was the 1989-1990 season, and the Bulls had been eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoffs again. They decided to make a big change and brought on a first time NBA Coach, Phil Jackson. Jackson had some changes he wanted to make to the offense when he was hired and it would mean less ball touches for Jordan. When the famous Triangle Offense was initiated that year, this was Jordan’s mindset: “There is an ‘I’ in WIN”. He was coming off multiple scoring titles and league MVP’s; why change it if it was working? Well, it was working individually for Jordan, but not for his team. It took Jordan some time, but eventually he would start to believe in this new “team” centered offense. In the next eight years, the Bulls would go on to win SIX Championships! How can we apply this to our lives? Everyone is a member of a team in some way, whether it is family, work, or some other joint effort. Sometimes we have to look beyond our individual successes and ask, “Am I contributing to the success of the team? Am I helping my team reach its goals?” If not, it may be time to change the game plan so that both you AND the team can be successful.
