These days we are all in need of a little “TP.” So, in light of the current shortage, I chose this quote by Dr. Paul TPWong.
As we continue down this difficult and unfamiliar path, it is important to remember how grit and resiliency is developed in each of us. Some of our best accomplishments are at the end of our most difficult challenges. It is through adversity and suffering that we develop true grit and resiliency. We must acknowledge, not ignore, the negatives in life so that we can choose to persevere through them.
Most of you are aware of how the AaronStrong Foundation was created and the purpose behind it. Our mission is to empower people with self-grit and determination to confront and overcome adversity. Each of us has a story to tell, and that story can be a motivating factor in someone else’s life that may help them push through their own tough times.
In 1988, my wife (Leah) was a victim of a school shooting. Leah was nine years old and was enjoying her P.E. class when tragedy struck. She was in the middle of a cartwheel when she felt a sharp sensation through her upper body. Leah suffered a collapsed lung, and the bullet lodged in her right bicep, which created a unique situation with her right arm. The bullet produced a growth issue and severely limited her arm’s mobility. Due to this issue, Leah underwent major reconstructive surgery on her right elbow a few years later. Leah, now twelve years old, was told by doctors that she would not be able to play sports that involved the use of her right arm, as a result of this surgery. For Leah, not playing sports was not an option.
Through grit and resiliency, Leah persevered and not only played softball and volleyball, but exceled as a college softball player at Lake Sumter Community College and Stetson University. Although pain and suffering were part of her story at that time in her life, it was the process of overcoming these obstacles that led to this accomplishment.
We all have pain and suffering throughout life; with grit and resiliency you can choose to overcome it!
