Happy #MotivationalMonday (6/10/19)
It is so fitting to tell someone to have a good perspective, especially when it comes to overcoming a major hurdle in one’s life. We know that perspective is the way to overcoming adversity, but it’s not always as easy as it sounds. Some things are just easier said than done.
When I was growing up, I was mesmerized by Jim Abbott. For starters, he was a Major League Baseball player, and what kid who loves baseball doesn’t want to be a professional player? What was more astonishing was that he was pitching at such a high level with only one hand. I found myself in awe over his ability and talent. He won 87 games, struck out over 880 batters, and pitched 1,674 innings, including a no-hitter with the New York Yankees.
What I didn’t fully understand back then was his incredible mindset, which in my opinion, paved the way for his talent to prosper and become a great skill. His quote here says it all about his mindset; he was NOT going to be defined by his disability. Instead, he would overcome it with the abilities he DID have.
Stop focusing on the things you struggle with or can’t do AND start focusing on what abilities you DO have! These abilities (if focused on correctly) very well might overpower those you are lacking. It sure did for Jim Abbott!
