In light of this week’s tragic suicide of a teenager (the third one within a month in Lake County, Florida), I wanted to use this opportunity to instill PURPOSE & HOPE. I don’t want to hear of another case where one of our youth sees suicide as their only option, WE as a community and a nation need to do more! We need to educate the youth (and others) that there is light at the end of what may seem like a very dark tunnel.
Many adults, including myself, have successfully battled depression. We do not need to hide our struggles but instead embrace them while allowing others to know they are not alone. It does not make us vulnerable or weak if we talk about our past, it’s who we were, and we should not shy away from this opportunity to help others. We can be that light at the end of the tunnel!
Help is possible and so is defeating depression. To me, depression is like living in a fog, it is hard to see and think straight with this fog, but the sun is still there. What young people need to know is there are multiple ways to clear that fog, some ways being more effective than others, depending on the individual. For some, it’s a life-long battle, but no matter what, there is a purpose for you beyond the fog. The most important thing is to first seek help. If you, or someone you know, are battling with these thoughts, there is help! You can start by contacting The National Suicide Prevention Hotline, 1-800-273-8255, www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org . Let’s work together to find purpose in every beating heart.
