Great Job to all our runners, we look forward to seeing you next year!
The clouds broke on Saturday morning, February 23rd just before the 10 am start of our annual Flashback 5k, presented by Texas Roadhouse, Clermont, FL. Over 65 participants lined up with the sun at their back and a light breeze in the air to run the trail at Waterfront Park along the beautiful Lake Minneola.
The first of the beet red faces to cross the finish line was 10-year-old Evan Nelan, with an astounding time of 22:17. His considerable lead impressed everyone, and from the exhausted look on his face, it was obvious he had run his hardest to take home the 1st place medal.
Just after the 29-minute mark were the first female finishers, sisters Paige and Megan. Big smiles crossed their faces as they ran in tandem across the finish line. They enjoy exercising regularly at the gym, doing weights and running on treadmills or outside.
As far as the conditions, “It was hot!” they said as they drank the rest of their water bottles.
“We like to give to a good cause, and Mr. Bultema is my teacher, so I wanted to support him.” Megan said. She knows how important GRIT is as she focuses on getting her high school work done and pushing through when it gets hard.
Platinum Sponsor Personal Mini Storage handed out room-temperature water bottles to the runners as they finished.
“Last year we had ice but found that the runners didn’t want cold water right afterwards.” Ron said.
According to him, everything about business starts with being personal, and he says that being the largest family-owned self-storage facility in Florida makes a huge difference in customer service. There are 46 facilities in Florida, six near Clermont.
“We try to be in tune with the ambiance of the community. Our employees live here; their kids go to school here, so we love giving to local charities.”
As the race ended, the participants cooled under in the shade, lounging their backs against tree trucks, eating granola bars, and talking with friends and family while awaiting awards. Kids swarmed to the bounce house hosted by Platinum Sponsor Gloria James Rental. Andy, the Armadillo from Texas Roadhouse, posed for pictures, and runners visited the tents of our sponsors.
Rashad from Stormy Hill Harley-Davidson allowed visitors to climb up on a motorcycle and rev the engine.
“It’s not going anywhere! Easy on the gas!” He laughed, talking about how many people enjoyed the “ride” and a bag of swag goodies too. Earlier in February, they hosted a Chili Cook-Off and raised $600 for AaronStrong.
During the awards, both Jason Kwong with a time of 27:31 and Logan received a shiny blue medal in their age groups.
“I couldn’t keep up with the little kids; those guys were fast!” Logan exclaimed as he talked about the race.
Jason commented on the way David encourages students that they can have success by putting forth the effort. “That is the success, really. The effort alone.”
Another runner Brian Dougherty echoes the importance of AaronStrong’s message as he coaches baseball and motivates the team to stay positive when things aren’t going well. “I tell them not to focus on the issue at hand, but on the long-term objective.”
Some of the runners were from David’s baseball team, and it was already clear that they possessed GRIT as they fought to finish the race well, sprinting on the home stretch. During awards, they clapped for their friends, supporting each other without a thought and exhibiting a true TEAM mindset.
Family and friends enjoyed the beautiful day at the park, exercising, supporting Aaronstrong, and having some fun too.
